A mobile device (also known as a handheld device handheld computer or simply handheld) is a pocket-sized computing device typically having a display screen with touch input and/or a miniature keyboard. In the case of the personal digital assistant (PDA) the input and output are often combined into a touch-screen interface. Smartphones and PDAs are popular amongst those who require the assistance and convenience of certain aspects of a conventional computer in environments where carrying one would not be practical. Handheld devices have become ruggedized for use in mobile field management situations to record information in the field. They are used to achieve a variety of tasks for increasing efficiency that include digitizing notes sending and receiving invoices asset management recording signatures managing parts and scanning barcodes.

Recent developments in mobile collaboration systems employ handheld devices that combine the use of video audio and on-screen drawing capabilities to enable multi-party conferencing in real-time independent of location.1

Handheld computers used at work have molded over time into a variety of form factors including smartphones on the low end handheld PDAs Ultra-Mobile PCs and Tablet PCs. Mobile devices handhelds can also be mobile computers that are not just PDA's. The vertical that has been one of the first to widely adapt the usage of mobile computers is retail. But these devices benefit a variety of verticals these days. Such as logistics warehousing field service (incl. repair services security business cleaning) and manufacturing.

From the 70's these devices have utilized barcode technology but at the moment RFID is making its way. The first to implement has been retail esp. fashion houses and the supply chain to get more visibility and speed to the every day goods in inventory and other operations.
